Episode 2 of Beat The Outsiders, NFL Weekly Pickem by Skateboarders

The Desiree SHOW Episode 2 of Beat The Outsiders, NFL Weekly Pickem by Skateboarders.

IMG_1369

Well episode two of The Desiree Show’s “Beat the Outsiders” was as much fun as expected and as much smack talk as I had hoped plus you got a glimpse also of our actually text threads but a little censored, something I would love to share with you, but I believe you can just visualize from the show. You just can’t see the pictures.

Steve Olson and Sal Barbier join me at the Dash Studios, while Kenny Hughes called in via NYC. Raw and unedited with lots of smack talk, strong biased NFL opinions and picks, competitiveness, sass and lots of laughs!!

Also alot of protectiveness over their picks, especially the birthday to boy, Cowboy Kenny.IMG_1365(1)

Sensitivity by Sal for “his” Saints, Tigers and of course his spirit stick, (which we are all still patiently waiting to actually see even a photo of).

While first place (after week 5)  Mr SKOL Olson stays his calm self with witty jabs and subtle words throughout the show

On the thread or in The Desiree SHOW Weekly NFL Pickem, Rob Welsh, Lance Dawes. Chris Pastras, Chris Ray, Packy Fancher, Vinny Ponte and JT Aultz.

Stay tuned for episode 3, 4, and 5 and….. we will try quarterly, but just like skateboarders we did it our way, after week 5.  Hopefully the entire crew can make it in once, plus special guest including Jeff Ament, GLove and Ben Harper are slated as well.

Heads up on the video dropping from our inaugural show that kick it off, thanks to former center Ted Newsome.

If you missed the show on Dash Wednesday, October 11th you can listen to it in its the raw and unedited form on Itunes TheDesireeSHOW or via Soundcloud.

Football is Family, Especially on this Giving Tuesday

4174LACGiving Tuesdays is all over the NFL, players out in full force on their only days off, giving back to the community!

Last Tuesday my sister Dr. Patricia Riba and her clinic, Serving Kids Hope, the recipients of this special gift. As LA Chargers nose tackle and Bama 3 x BCS Champion Damion Square was at the Discovery Cube in Santa Ana helping to beat childhood obesity with healthy cooking options for game days and all the holidays.

This is always something that touches my heart, many or most of the amazing giving that goes on all over the league is done, and I must remind you, that this is the only day of the week the players get off and much giving under the radar.

Football is family and it was for me on Tuesday as well, Damion & Patricia share the same birthday, family love, community, college loyalty, cooking recipes, ideas and even a toast of healthy spicy tomato juice.  They both also share the desire and gift to give to the children.   Dr Patricia has been at the forefront of helping childhood obesity for close to 20 years.  4207LAC

Damion is also involved aiding with his Youth Fitness and Nutrition Clinic.

Much much respect to the Chargers.   Kimberly Layton, Chargers former Community Relations and currently VP of External Affairs responsible for heading all the community outreach and implementing many aspects throughout the area.  All her doings for the Chargers helped also pave the way throughout the NFL.  And Chase Hartman, Community Relations Manager along with John and Tim whom were also in attendance for the taping.

Was a true treat to meet this really special man, Damion Square even though he’s Roll Tide! He even stayed later to sign some helmets and jerseys for the staff.  I also look forward to having him on The Desiree SHOW.

Stay tuned for all the amazing and fun healthy cooking options with Damion and Dr Riba which will drop on October 11, 2017. Following with other holiday options as each one approaches.

The LA Chargers have a vast area they are giving back to, keep your eyes open to see all the wonderfulness that your community is receiving.

When the SD Chargers were trying to stay in San Diego, this aspect specifically, not just loosing an NFL team but all the outside, off the field, community reach in the entire San Diego area.  These special gifts throughout the vicinity impacted so many lives, not just the obvious Turkey, Blood Drives, but each school, football programs, gyms, individuals in need the beautiful hand of the Chargers touched.    I am still saddened for the are with the loss which they may or may not of realized while voting.  But I am happy for the entire Los Angeles and Orange County communities to having these priceless gifts.   I know or assume that the LA Chargers Community Relations have their hands full helping such a huge area!

WILLIE BUCHANON, FULL CIRCLE

Willie James Buchanon was born in Oceanside the city where he resides presently, although he went on to have a prolific career in the NFL, he came back and re-planted when his children were old enough to go to school. He seeded his real estate business in the same town, one that helps makes dreams possible, so that others could also enjoy it. He bleeds green and continues to give back to the youth and community.

“I always told myself if I ever had a chance to come back to Oceanside and give back I would do it, and that’s exactly what I’m dong.”

– Willie Buchanon

A husband, a father, a Hall of Famer, 2 x Pro Bowler, a track coach, a golfer, a business owner and more with a list of accolades, yet when I speak to former team mates it’s not just about his conduct on the field, his leadership or his captain characteristics, it is also about what he does to impact the kids and his locality. He truly cares, with integrity, service and respect engrained in his soul.

Willie has an inventory of merits, but what you might not know is that he will be celebrating 39 years of marriage next week with his beautiful wife Gwen, or that he was drafted in the first round by the Padres in 1969, but decided he wanted to play football, get an education and graduate from college. He went on to Mira Costa College where he also started a golf tournament to help get a baseball coach that became the Buchanon Youth Foundation, an organization, which gives to local high schools and funds under funded sports.

Always smiling and giving back!

On to San Diego State where he graduated and was voted MVP in the East West Shrine game of 1971. Became the Green Bay Packers first round draft choice, pick number 7, where he helped bring an under 500 team to 1st in the NFC Central and the honor of NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1972.

Number 28’s love for football, sports and being a Pirate is deep rooted, his father worked for the school system.   He used to help his dad set up for the Oceanside football games, turning the lights on and off, placing the numbers on the field and the flags in the end zone. He continues to be apart of OHS helping mold young adults as the track coach for the last few decades.

“Best cornerback I had ever seen, with a skill set that today in the NFL he’d be All Pro.  He came into the league a year after I, he helped bring our team from a 4-8-2 season to 10-4 in one year.  He is our foundation Master of Ceremony every year,A great guy! Love him, his wife Gwen and family.  He’s the greatest guy. Willie is an Ace!”

-John Brockington, Green Bay Packer HOF

In his final year as a Packer he led the team with 9 interceptions, 4 of those came on September 24, 1978 against the San Diego Chargers, the team he would play for the remaining 4 seasons of his NFL career and in those years tied the NFL All-Time record for most recoveries in a game. Willie was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and is a member of the San Diego Chargers 50th Anniversary Team.

Willie continues to nurture the youth and Oceanside with love extending his care thru multiple charities and foundations as well as sharing the gift of finding a home in this gorgeous place.

Thank you Willie for being the man that you are!

All Eyes on San Diego tonight for MNF!

The Chargers (2-2) host the Steelers (2-2) center stage on Monday Night Football.

This week it is welcome back Antonio Gates, congrats to Phillip Rivers, the AFC Offensive Player of the Week, Chargers locker room sound, inside the lions den, and what it means to play on Monday Night.

Another heat wave is here as the Chargers host yet another hot game.  Vets will tell rookies it’s just a Sunday game on Monday, but the truth is every eye is on you.  A chance for family, friends and the nation to watch, essentially every football fan will be watching!  Prime time, the lights, national television along with the ESPN broadcast crew, Mike Tirico and John Gruden in the booth, hopefully John won’t be playing catch with fish, perhaps he ran into Barrack Obama on the golf course or enjoyed the beach where the temperatures have reached to the upward 90’s in the last few days.

Yes, Monday Night Football is big!

Tonight will mark the 29th time the Chargers and Steelers meet in the regular season spanning from 1971 and the third Monday Night Football game.   The last time these to met in the regular season San Diego took the W 34-24 at Heinz Field December 9, 2012.

After speaking with Antonio Gates I was heart warmed to hear his response to his first MNF, it wasn’t his first, but it was Phillip Rivers first, attesting to the closeness of this group.   Antonio’s next touchdown catch will be his 100 and possibly could come tonight on his first game back for the season.

Antonio Gates on his first MNF,

“I remember Phillip’s first one, I don’t remember my first one, I remember Phillips, when he first came, against the Oakland Raiders. He threw me a touchdown and we talk about this one, this is the one I remember and this is the one that sticks in my mind.  He threw me a touchdown and he was like, “one of many” and at the time it was like whatever, he hadn’t thrown me the ball the whole game.  Come to find out how many touchdowns later and I just remember him saying it to me and he was all excited.”

Random tidbits you may not know, Malcolm Floyd’s first MNF was almost 11 years ago to the day vs. the Pittsburg Steelers on October 10th at Qualcomm, where the Steelers edged over the Chargers 24-22.

gordon7058

Playing on Monday Night Football, whether it’s the first or most memorable, I spoke with Antonio Gates, Keenan Allen, Malcom Floyd, Cordarrow Law, Tyreek Burwell, Jimmie Wilson, Jason Verrett, Javonte Herndon and Michael Ola.   Ambient locker room emotion is present and even Joe Barksdale is captured chirping in.   Enjoy, it’s raw!

After leaving camp I had an even more in depth perspective of the closeness this group does have, the “Lions Den” where all the offensive linemen congregate demonstrated to me how these players have been able to fill in and protect their quarterback, through injuries and other sorts of adversity.  It was loud, teasing and passionate the perfect recipe for any group of successful linemen. This resonates as well throughout the locker room with each positions group and is quite visible even at first glances as you see them all grouped together talking and joking amongst themselves.

The Game

Gruden: Blitzing Philip Rivers is risky proposition for Steelers

Blitzing is a big part of the Steelers’ defensive makeup, but Chargers QB Philip Rivers’ quick release — and smarts — can make Pittsburgh pay – John Gruden.

The Leader, Phillip Rivers ©desireeastorga

Antonio Gates also creates a threat to Pittsburg, whether as a decoy or not, the Steelers defense struggles with tight ends. Chargers will have their handsful keeping the leader of this team Philip Rivers upright; pass protection and opening creases for Woodhead, Gordon and Oliver in the run.

Although Pittsburg has a 42-24 record on MNF, Steelers will be without Ben Rothlisberger for the second week and with thirty-five year old Michael Vick in, but don’t dismiss the fact that Todd Haley will have eleven days of prep and tweaking.

Danny (Wonder) Woodhead, drills ©desireeastorga

The Chargers secondary will have some work this evening containing Antonio Brown and the line with halting Le’Veon Bell and D’Angelo Williams (I always think of “smash and dash”).

Both teams will duke it out to stay afloat in their respective divisions, should be a fantastic game, Chargers find a way to win in this unseasonably hot October in San Diego.
