Bolts & Dawgs

Chargers head to Cleveland to face America’s new favorite sweethearts the stars of HBO’s Hard Knocks, but the Bolts don’t see them as darlings.

If you have football Tourette’s as I do you also watched it, and if your the kind of person or sucker I am you wished they could just get a win, learn or relearn how to. Just like how life sometimes is hard with multiple adversities hit you, you start to expect the shoe to drop, on a personal note I know I have had to shift my thinking to get thru similar hard times.  Human interest or the common rooting for the perpetual underdog, is obsolete in this scenario, the Browns first win this season was the first in 635 days when they beat the Chargers on Christmas Eve 2016.

It’s not a trap game, not for LA.  Although many variables have changed in those days (635) the exclamation point of loosing to the win-less Browns on Christmas Eve is not forgotten and will not be overlooked.

Chargers played their most complete game this season vs. the Raiders last Sunday and are 3-2.  Rank in top offense with yards, both rushing & passing. Phillip Rivers showcasing something special with this team as epitomized Sunday with the celebration TD photo! Quite a rarity! Something cool is brewing with this offense or gelling.

Chargers have experience and success with new quarterback’s ( Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and C.J Beathard)  whom also come with little film, they’ve been able to contain, disrupt and pressure them successfully. And vs the run last week the defense contained Marshawn Lynch  to 31 yards, Sunday they will face Carlos Hyde.

The special teams woes addressed with the reuniting of former Eagles teammates, the addition of  Donnie Jones last week however Caleb Sturgis may be out on Sunday and Michael Badgley is on stand by.

The kicking game is one aspect that these two teams have had in common one that both teams have had issues with this season.

The Browns who started the season not with a loss but a tie are at 2-2-1. They have a new king at the helm number one draft pick Baker Mayfield coming in with 3 TDs and 3 INTs whom made his debut in their first win.  Sunday will be his third start, although the hype has been on him, Browns defense led by DC Greg Williams are first in the NFL in takeaways with 15.

The Browns are 2nd in rushing  and their defense 12th allowing 22.9 points a game (reminder they contained Drew Brees and the Saints to 21 points in the 3-point loss). They handed the Ravens their 2nd loss and the Steelers a tie in OT. This team has some grit and probably the most loyal fan base in the NFL, ones whom no matter what the record or the temperatures are at FirstEnergy Stadium. They have a new mascot as well whom showed up at their first win vs. the Jets, a possum, another showed in their win vs. the Ravens.

A few connections

Adrian Phillips played against Baker Mayfield when he was at Texas Tech and Chargers are familiar with Todd Hailey (KC HC 2009-11 and OC Steelers 2012-2017).

IMO prediction: Chargers win, no way they go back into Cleveland with this group and not come out with win.

Last Day of Chargers Training Camp & Joint Practices with the Saints

Last Day of Chargers Training Camp & Joint Practices with the Saint.

Costa Mesa, CAMWilliamsHeld6921

Beautiful day in Costa Mesa at Jack Hammett Sport Complex where the Los Angeles Chargers hosted the New Orleans Saints for a second day of group practices many fans, media and player’s families in attendance.  The set up truly beautiful with regal white pillowy shade canopies for the fans and media, although many fans made their way as close to the field as possible to take in all the action.

fansA6977

This was my first time at Jack Hammett and my first time back since OTA’s in May this year. As to be expected a special buzz of excitement as football is back and week 3 of the Preseason is here and kicks off tonight with the Browns hosting the Eagles. Saturday the vibe will be different, as Chargers will host the Saints at Stubhub Center 5 PM PST for game 3 of the Preseason.

One of the special things about Training Camps is that families are present, and that fans have the unique closeness to their rooting teams.

IMG_6529

Another is the bond from college that go beyond the line of scrimmage for life.   Football truly is family! Throw in two head coaches, Anthony Lynn and Sean Payton whom have a history both working under Bill Parcel’s for the Cowboys, 2 Quarterbacks Phillip Rivers and Drew Brees whom have a strong long bond connecting to their families. Alabama BCS champion teammates Damion Square and Mark Ingram and even Coach Payton’s daughter Meghan shadowing Chargers Team Reporter Hayley Elwood.  That’s just part of the special atmosphere that happened on Thursday for the joint practice.

Autographs_UkennaPlus7058

Scrimmages make for a real quality connect as well, not just for the players, but also to the fans. For the players it is a chance to compete with another pro team and for the fans it’s well, just exciting, plus they get to get some autographs of their favorite players and be really close to the action.

Chargers second round draft pick, Trojan and rookie Uchenna  Nwosa spoke on his first scrimmage,

” It’s kind of cool to be able to go against another professional team in practice I’ve never had that happen before, to be able to get that field atmosphere, see how things go around, fans come out and watch it’s all a great feeling.  I just try to embrace it and come here prepared to work.”

– Uchenna Nwosa

Although Saturday’s Exhibition game at StubHub between the two will be disparate, passions will be flying for prospective players having the chance to make it on the field vying to make an important impact on coaches to make the final 53-man roster. Normally teams that have scrimmages play starters minimally, but because it is week 3, Anthony Lynn stated his intentions were to play the number ones for 30 plays or a half as the starters won’t play that much the final preseason game in San Francisco next Thursday.

“We are still going to play our starters 30 plays,  a half, we are still going to do that, it just happens to be the third game.

Usually when you practice against a team you can pull them back a little bit, but we need to see those guys play a little bit, because they won’t play much the following week.”

-Anthony Lynn

The cut from 90 to 53 is coming soon, September 1st. This year marks the second year to have one cut vs. the older 2 cut scenario. As you all know there are many competitions going on to make an active roster, for the Chargers a few specific battles going on, the kicking game probably at 1, at number 2  the Backup QB, along with the RBs and who will fill the void without Antonio Gates or Hunter Henry?

I will assume if your reading this that your aware that the ‘easiest spot’ to get on an active roster is on Special Teams.

JJJonesAUtograph7067As visually seen last Saturday vs. the Seahawks J.J. Jones made an impact with his 72 yard punt return for 6, and a combined total of returns (kick and punt) of 114 yards, he also received quite a few fans at the scrimmage.

RB Rookie Detrez Newsome also making an impact last week with 19 carries for 78 yards.

RB38_A7074

I asked Detrez what it was like walking out to play his first NFL game vs. Cardinals, he smiled

“I’m not gonna lie, I was nervous one, as all no way, but as soon as I got the first contact I was all good, that’s all I need was that first contact to get me in the zone.”

Super excited to be able to bring you weekly coverage on the Chargers both on and off the field, from x’s and o’s to giving back and everything in between!

Football is BACK !!

Desiree

It’s here, Super Bowl LII Kicking Off

It’s here, Super Bowl LII kicking off in 3 hours!

The Underdog vs. The Dynasty?!

Patriots headed to their 10th Super Bowl, the Eagles to their 3rd and still searching for their 1st ring, the underdogs vs. the seasoned veterans.

#FlyEaglesFly or #OneMore!

Many many story lines coming in the last two weeks, over last few weeks I brought a little variety to The Desiree Show.

Former Patriot AFC champ Marrio Grier and Jim Steeg the man singly responsible for bringing the Super Bowl to the biggest one day sporting event along with Philly raised Bones team manager Vern Laird and what it’s like to be an Eagles fan.

A former NFL RB for the Patriots, 1996 AFC champion drafted in the 1996 draft 6th round 195th pick by New England.  Marrio Grier whom played under HC Parcells, Belichick as DC, Charlie Weiss as WR coach & Romeo Cremel as DL coach along a full cast of players & following with Pete Carrol at the helm. This was the 2nd time Marrio was on my show, broadcasting on last Wednesday.  The coaching history amplified with the 30 for 30 ‘The Two Bills’ premier airing Thursday evening, definitely want to catch it!  Marrio shares what it means to be a Patriot. and yes, not all NFL Organizations are the same bleed or breed dynasties, but that’s not the only reason.  He also shared what it was like receiving  the call from Bill Parcells and his first meeting of Mr. Kraft.

Jim Steeg coming in with 35 years in the NFL with a variety of roles, 26 in charge of Special Events for the NFL, former Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the San Diego Chargers, Controller of the Dolphins, CSAG member and the list of continues.  Currently primarily with the collegiate world.  Twenty-six of those years Jim was in charge of the Super bowl and Pro Bowl. this alone is unfathomable and what he was able to do truly awing. Focusing on making everyone comfortable from players’  families, child care to the entire teams,  to accommodations to taking care of the media on a level today which has dropped along with the fan experience.  Throw in the gnarliest A-List of entertainment, on the stage and singing the national anthem, but don’t forget the following week of that wasn’t enough as well.  (Yes, the Pro Bowl used to follow the Super Bowl remember).

U2, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Phil Collins, Mary J Bilge, Smokey Robinson, Chubby Checkers, Tony Bennett, George Burns, Mickey Rooney, ZZ Top, the Blues Brothers, James Brown, the rockets the USC marching back had to throw in) and that only a smidgeon of all that you brought from 1979 to 2004.

Jim shares some of his ah ha moments during his tenor, and darn the NFL would be lucky to have him back! I am happy that a friend I hold in the highest regard will be singing the national anthem today, Alecia Moore AKA Pink and knock everyone’s socks off!  Who didn’t realize what the stage was or that he would have fans from countries he hadn’t ever played for be able to see him perform.  And of course DIANA Ross, listen to hear how that happened and how that shifted it all, no it wasn’t upside down, but in some ways it did go upside down as this was the shift that opened endless super bowl half time shows & national Anthems.  But the one he wanted for years and years never came to fruit only after he left, did Bruce Springsteen play.

To bring an Eagles perspective, Vern Laird in studio January 23rd on what it means to be an Eagles fan, growing up in Philly, and why the under dog is so suited for this city! Come on it’s an easy Rocky? Hello! Vince Papale, but its more than that.

Game stats and more:

To the game more stats, yes! But these are easy; the number one seeds face off in Minneapolis. More about the host city with an awesome man whom always is giving back to the community and youth and what The Twin Cities are about, yes we all know its cold, really cold, especially now but, Mark Rodriquez owner of 3rd Lair amplifies the love for his community an illustration on what the people are like and also the ties to the SB and skateboarding. Did you know that they were granted one of the 52 grants for a new skatepark, yeah the SB community and that X-Games nothing?

Patriots head to their 3rd Super Bowl in 4 seasons

(Their 10th SUPER BOWL appearance)

8TH since 2001 their first Championship.

1985- Lost 46-10 to Bears

1998- Lost 35-21 to Packers

2001- Won 20-17 over Rams

2003- Won 32-29 over Panthers

2004- Won 24-21 over Eagles

2007- Lost 17-14 to Giants

2011- Lost 21-17 to Patriots

2014- Won 28-24 over Seahawks

2016- Won 34-28 over Falcons

Experience; Patriots with 33 players having been to a Super Bowl where as Eagles with 6. RPO yep, you’ve been hearing it and yes Eagles are strong in this play. Can Doug Pederson, Jim Schwartz and Frank Reich be able to plan to beat the dynasty, they sure have that go for it mentality.  This go for it mentality/ game plan of the Eagles, they need not seize that and play 60 minutes, disable diversion and adjust if needed, but don’t retreat and they can win.  And yes, the same as what I stated regarding New England hosting Jacksonville for AFC Championship game but I’ll add one more adjustment give yourself a chance, Bill will have 2-3 full plans to shift if needed the game plan at any given moment.

Eagles to win

eaglesdogmasks-35147958931338be.jpg

60 min full play, not a second less.  Get pressure on Brady!! Rattle him contain the run, on the offense don’t abounding the run you can’t at that’s not because Carson Wentz isn’t there that’s simple football 101, on the same vein do your job.  Creative ways to get you receivers.  Quick out routes, not always sexy but effective as Pats CBs play inside, using sidelines and no defensive communication breakdowns, they need to have faster communications which is challenging vs. Tom Brady with his dink and dunking. Pressure pressure pressure on Tom, and don’t let up, don’t over pursue. Use the Patriots motto of do your job!

Patriots to win

843894666.0

Experience by far is on their side; familiarity, which is paramount with a football plus this, is Tom’s 8th SB appearance. Eagles  need no def breakdowns, faster communication but Eagles play CB’s way off, however only given up 17 in post but, Brady’s quick release could expose this and potentially be disastrous.

Passion both teams have it!

The underdog Rocky climate of Philadelphia the entire demeanor of the city plus anger at the loss the last time they had a SB appearance in Jacksonville vs. New England

Pats have too, could it be end of an era? Will that also be used with Belichick coaching tree grows as Matt Patricia to Detroit HC and josh McDaniel’s to Indy. Last time took a few years to get back to the Super bowl after they lost their cords but not long. Does this even matter? More importantly the discipline that this team plays with and the do your job there are no hero’s only a team. Btw did you Notice no crazy TD celebration dances?

I’m seriously on the fence, hard hard hard to pick against the Belichick always is, I think that if Eagles can keep pressure and play as they have utilize their running game, contain/ pressure Tom and the run of the Pats, an entire game and make necessary adjustments they can, just as I believed that Jaguars could, but we saw what happened. I’m going to say that it’s going to be close, (I thought that NFC Championship game would be too, however, lol)

One last random tidbit Eagles earn best celebration dance while can you remember any Patriot dance all season?

If and only if Philly can do what I outlined, they can win, it will be close, 21-20 or 24-21.

Now you see I haven’t given an affirmative vote on either, exited to watch this one, enjoy Super Bowl Sunday!

Divisional Rounds with Byron Chamberlain

Divisional Rounds were set and the National Champion crowned as Byron Chamberlain joined my in studio at Dash Radio for the Desiree SHOW.

Season-One-Episode-Guide-for-Little-House-on-the-Prairie-450x293

Also, did you know what TV series came from Minnesota?  I sure didn’t, and was surprised to hear not only that it was Little House on the Prairie, but that Byron knew that.

Our picks are on the show, however I will let you know I ended up shifting one that was a heart pick that some how Jacksonville could go in and get a W at Heinz Field.

Also, if you missed last weeks show I was thankful to welcome back Nick Ferguson, on January 3, we also went through our picks for the Wild Card Weekend, and I will admit I was only 500, 2 out of 4 of the picks.

Here’s the show if you missed on Dash.

One more bit of vital info for you all, if you are headed to Minneapolis for Super Bowl 52, Byron is involved in a pretty rad event Artic Bold in downtown  at Stella’s Fish Cafe on February 1st you can still get tickets here.

Updates, Promises & Quick Hits

Updates, promises and a quick whip around.

First, this may be all over the place, please bear with me, it also maybe long winded, but I want to say or pledge to be more active on here, that meaning at least a weekly post.

A plethora of going-ons all over sports, with The Desiree Show and myself.
Probably one of the most amazing Series just finished up, NFL through week 8 surprises, upsets and trades. Plus the tally on Beat the Outsiders after the first 2 quarters for the weekly NFL pickem by skateboarders and a small hold on the show.

beattheoustidersMockup3-1

As previously mentioned, I will be posting at least one blog a week coinciding with the show and a catch up on past shows that you may have missed. Reminder the Desiree SHOW broadcasts at Dash Radio in Hollywood on Wednesdays, it airs 4-5 PM PST. In addition the show re-ars multiple times throughout the week. I might add some great news as well coming from DASH, which you will patiently need to wait for. The show also is uploaded to Soundcloud and ITunes.

The hold, just a small one I had a procedure two weeks ago on my leg, 13 staples and have to lay low, which is extremely difficult, but I am trying to be a good patient so I don’t have any repercussions, I’ll say make sure you are always covered with sun block and I won’t share the photo with the 13 staples, but I say that ALL was removed successfully.   I just need to let my leg heal now, something a bit challenging for a non stop human, but I am.

Since the show moved to DASH, I’ve had some amazing guests both in studio and via the phone and a slew of slated guest lined up.

10/11 BEAT THE OUTSIDERS EPISODE 2
SAL BARBIER, STEVE OLSON & MYSELF with KENNY HUGHES calling in.

This Series Dodgers / Astros World Series welcomed two over 100 win teams, the Dodgers with 104 and the Astros 101 and had surpassed many World Series. Was one of the most prolific scoring, new balls and some big time hitting. Congrats to the World Champion Houston Astros on their first tittle ever and heads high although the outcome will always produce a second place, LA Dodgers had a phenomenal run. And please no hate on the players or the GM, it’s sickening to me to see all the rants and dismissals of this team. Remember there are no losers in the WORLD SERIES, no player or GM sucks, ok…I use that as I saw that all over also asking for Dave Roberts head. Maybe you question Roberts pitching line up decisions, blame the loss on Darvish having 2 bad games, leaving 10 on base in Game 7…….doesn’t matter nor does it warrant hate, one of these teams was going to walk away the champion and the other not. This was a GAME 7 series as well!  I will say that I was pretty awed at all the players looking really nervous amplifying the importance of this game to all on the diamond.

Thank you and the utmost respect to both teams on the most amazing baseball series I have seen! Congratulations also to Correa’s to be as we all witnessed one of the most amazing proposals post game.

On to the the NFL, trade deadlines offered some shocking news, and predictably non predictable outcomes through the first 2 quarters in the season. here’s a quick I mean really quick whip around, today Colts placed Andrew Luck on IR, Ezekial Elliot will be suspended 6 weeks. The league has 2 teams still unable to get a W, and I have to confess after reading Bill Walsh’s book, ‘The Score Takes Care of Itself’ recently, a must read, I have had expectations of the 49ers in the belief that they can shift the outcome of this newly rebuilding team.  That has yet to happen however they acquired Jimmy Garroppola from the Patriots for a 2nd rounder in the 2018 draft with Hoyer making his way to New England the following day with trade to the single QB roster of the Patriots. Unfortuantely their are still 2 teams whom have yet to get a W, the poor Cleveland Browns, whom I also secretly root for weekly and the Niners.  Best record in the NFL the 7-1 Philadelphia Eagles.   There have been devastating injuries throughout, Aaron Rodgers, JJ Watt, Odell Beckham Jr, Dalvin Cook, DAvid Johnson, Julian Edelman, Andrew Luck and  more just too many to address however most currently and scary Bear’s Zach Miller, Joe Flacco’s almost decapitation from Kiko Alonson and sadly also Cleveland Browns longest starter OT Joe Thomas who now missed his first snap in 11 years. He is however doing some journalism via MMQ

mmqBrowns.jpg

Sadly just before I was finishing this post it has been reported that Houston’s DeShaun Watson is out for the season with a torn ACL sustained during practice.

IMG_1188

Beat the Outsiders, we have had two episodes on The Desiree SHOW it’s all outside the NFL, skateboarders picking NFL games, yes I wish I could show you our text thread, however it would probably take you 3 weeks to read it and see all the gifs. As of week 8, Rob ‘Patriot’ Welsh takes the last two weeks with back to back impressive 13/15 and 12/13 bringing him in 4th with a prolific texting Cowboy Kenny Hughes in the first place, Steve ‘SKOL’ Olson in the 2nd and JT ‘Bolt‘ Aultz, I might add very quiet in the thread in 3rd. I tanked last week, made 3 changes 20 min before the AM games all for losses, but no crying in football or baseball for that matter.

Here’s the full current overall list and stay tuned for more in depth on all the players!wk8overall.jpg

Thursday Night Football kicking off in 4 hours, AFC EAST showdown.

The (5-2) Buffallo Bills at the (3-5) NY Jets. Bills find themselves a game back from the Patriots with two consecutive wins, while the Jets looking up but not out of the picture either however with 3 back to back losses. I will take the Bills tonight.

Well episode two of The Desiree Show’s “Beat the Outsiders” was as much fun as expected and as much smack talk as I had hoped plus you got a glimpse also of our actually text threads but a little censored, something I would love to share with you, but I believe you can just visualize from the show. You just can’t see the pictures.

Steve Olson and Sal Barbier join me at the Dash Studios, while Kenny Hughes called in via NYC. Raw and unedited with lots of smack talk, strong biased NFL opinions and picks, competitiveness, sass and lots of laughs!!

Also alot of protectiveness over their picks, especially the birthday to boy, Cowboy Kenny.IMG_1365(1)

Sensitivity by Sal for “his” Saints, Tigers and of course his spirit stick, (which we are all still patiently waiting to actually see even a photo of).
